Access to HE Diploma programmes are specifically designed to provide opportunities for mature students of 19 years of age and above, from disadvantaged and under-represented groups, to progress to Higher Education (HE).

Access to HE programmes are open to those who may have few, if any, formal prior qualifications. They are designed for people who wish to return to study after a number of years out of education, and are aimed at helping people to build both academic and personal confidence, and to use this confidence to transfer general life skills into the learning environment.

Some Access to HE programmes lead to a specific named route within HE (eg Access to Law, Access to Art and Design) and some are more general with a range of possible career directions.

A range of more recently developed Access to HE programmes have been vocationally linked (eg Nursing, Guidance, Counselling and Social Work), and by working in partnership with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs). Some local HE providers are now able to offer the option of guaranteed interviews and/or places on some programmes.

Many Access programmes will include a compulsory core element, including study skills, academic writing skills, research skills , as well as the study of appropriate academic subjects up to HE level.

Programmes are usually designed so that they can be taken over one year or, on a more part-time basis, over two or more years. Most providers of Access courses are able to offer timetables that are child friendly for students with families, and many are able to support students by offering on and off-site child care facilities. This offer will be different from provider to provider.
