Welcome to OCNYHR

Posted on 05 May 2009

Welcome to the first of our weekly news updates to let you know something of the work of the Open College Network in the Yorkshire and Humber Region.

I hope that this will build into being an informative archive of links and progress updates for our membership network and the wider learning and skills sector. I hope to cover policy and project matters and to share something with you of our work in Yorkshire and the Humber.

A new Chief Executive Officer for the Open College Network - Yorkshire and Humber Region (OCNYHR)

Posted on 05 May 2009

I took up the post of Chief Executive Officer at OCNYHR on Monday 20th April, 2009 on the retirement of Sarah Connell, whose job title was Regional Director. The OCN staff and Trustee Board Members gave Sarah a good send off at the Quo Vadis Restaurant in Wakefield on Thursday 23rd April and thanked her most sincerely for her many years’ service to the Open College Network.

My working life has included posts as the National Education Officer (Adult Services) for the learning disability charity, mencap and I have worked as both a Tutor-Organiser for Adult Basic Education in North Derbyshire and as an Adult Education Adviser-Inspector with a West Midlands Local Authority. My more recent posts have been with Ufi/learndirect as the Head of Equality and Diversity and Project Funding and most recently at NIACE, The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education as the Regional Development Officer for the Yorkshire and the Humber Region.

I am very much enjoying my first few days in the job and have already met a number of members who have attended Continuous Professional Development (CPD) events at our new(ish) offices at Lower Warrengate, Wakefield.

Use of Credit to Increase Achievement in the Yorkshire and Humber Region

Posted on 05 May 2009

I look forward to meeting many more members over the coming months and to working with you to progress the use of credit across the Y&H Region. To that end, could I ask you to review the proposal prepared by Clare Wigzell and her Business Development colleagues, which includes an argument for bite-sized chunks of credit-based learning; links with the Foundation Learning Tier; and Progression Routes for learners making the learning journey to their first full Level Two qualification. We would welcome any comments and queries on this proposal, addressed to c.wigzell@ocnyhr.org.uk.
